This exciting book provides the most recent views on melanoma care. The author’s vast experience together with a thorough review of the international literature has produced an excellent piece of work. The book begins with an Introduction, including guidelines issued by international Cancer Societies. The first three chapters are on melanocytes and melanoma, epidemiology and etiology of the disease, respectively. Chapter 4 addresses the clinical and histological picture, as well as the diagnosis. Chapter 5 addresses the surgical treatment of primary cutaneous melanoma, chapter 6 the sentinel lymph node, chapter 7 the surgical treatment of lymph node and chapter 8 of distant metastases. Chapter 9 examines the role of radiotherapy in melanoma treatment. Chapter 10 addresses the medical treatment and chapter 11 the management of in-transit metastases. Chapter 12 is dedicated to mucosal melanoma and chapter 13 to ocular melanoma. Chapter 14 addresses melanoma of an unknown primary site and chapter 15 covers the relation between melanoma and female hormones/pregnancy. Chapter 16 refers to melanoma in children and, finally, chapter 17 presents guidelines of international Melanoma Societies regarding follow-up of melanoma patients. The text contains a wealth of information with much to be learned by physicians at all levels of expertise. No library is complete without it, and as Professor Golematis wrote in his foreword:” I hope that it will not remain on their shelves and that it will prove a useful tool in the international ‘fight’ against melanoma.
